| The
horse head and cross sabres recall cavalry military units and their close association
with the founding and public safety mission of local jurisdiction mounted units.
The banners add official flare to the emblem, and their configuration creates
the outline of a shield, a traditional symbol of law enforcement and a forerunner
of the modern badge. Although the St. Paul Mounted Unit in its current form was
officially established in the early 90's and reestablished after its dissolution,
the thought behind including the six pointed star (which can be found on every
St. Paul officer's badge) with "Est. 1854" connects us not only to the
rest of the police department but also to our proud past which included mounted
officers and horse drawn patrol wagons as standard operations. The colors of gold
and blue are traditional to law enforcement as well as military units, specifically
the cavalry. |
